Digital Portfolio for Exit Slips

Do you constantly give out index cards/post-it notes at the end of each lesson for exit slips? Do you keep finding them on the floor after giving them back? Exit slips are a great way to monitor each of your students' grasp on the topic taught in class that day. However, I struggle to get my students to hang on to them. How can I fix this?

I decided to create a digital portfolio for each of my students using - my favorite - Google Slides. After returning the index cards, each student takes a picture of the exit slip using an iPad and adds it to a slide in their personal Google Slide presentation I created for them for the current unit. In doing this, my students will always have a go-to study tool when reviewing their exit slips for the summative assessment.

There are various ways a teacher can use Google Slides in order for students to have for a review. The other 5th grade teacher tried creating one Google Slide presentation and each student posted their exit slip (with no grades or comments from the teacher) for the class to see. This allows each other to view one another's thinking. She required them to comment on 3 of their classmates' posts, similar to what we do for graduate school online. As a teacher, I can select a few exit slips to pose as a perfect exemplar for the rest of my students. This allows them to see what I expected.

I am still playing around with the best way to use Google Slides as a digital portfolio so stay tuned!
