Virtual Field Trip

I had the opportunity to attend the NSSC in San Francisco this year and I learned about virtual field trips, all by creating QR codes! I feel the use of QR codes in lessons tend to get over looked. I love using QR codes in my classroom for various things. I will post them around my room and my students can use an iPad to scan the QR code which will take them to a link I connected it to. Whether the QR code takes them to a YouTube Video or an interesting photograph, the students are up and moving around the classroom all the while learning about the content I have in store for them!

Most recently, I sent my students on a virtual field trip around my room to various Southwestern Native American sites. Students had an iPad and scanned QR codes that took them to places such as Mesa Verde through Google Maps, an image of pottery created by the Hopi tribe, to viewing an authentic performance of a buffalo dance by the Navajo tribe. Students had a question packet that corresponded with the QR codes which enabled them to take away the content I wanted them to learn in the classroom, but they were able to "leave" school virtually. It was an incredible experience! However, it did take quite some time to plan...but totally worth it!

There are plenty of free QR code scanning applications you can download on iPads or iPhones.

How have you used QR codes in your classroom?
